Koi Shadows

Koi Shadows

mixed polage art media, AP, 30"

For years we had a koi pond in the entry way to our home.  Over the years the fish grew from just a few inches to over 18 inches in length.  They eventually outgrew our small pond and we found them a larger home.  I miss them.  I loved watching them wind in and out of the complex shadows cast on the surface by the surrounding vegetation.

A New Era

A New Era

mixed polage art media, edition of 12, 19"

The ancient Polynesians navigated by the stars and the wind and waves and currents. Recently some of their voyages have been recreated in a traditional canoe called the Hokule’a.  “She is more than a voyaging canoe—she represents the common desire shared by the people of Hawaii, the Pacific, and the World to protect our most cherished values and places from disappearing.” The Hokulea is also an affirmation of ancient traditions kept alive in the culture of the Islands represented in this piece by the image of the Hula dancer.

Pond Life I

Pond Life I

A pond is a delicate ecology with multiple creatures living together and keeping their environment in balance.  This piece has some whimsy as the frog jumps off a lily pad in one view.

Polarized light colors are perfect for depicting the brilliance of reef fish. Put on a mask, stick your head in the waters of Maui and suddenly you are in a whole other world of life and movement.

Koi & Lily

Koi & Lily

mixed polage art media, edition of 25, 12"

The Koi in my entry pond inspired me for years. We watched them grow from a few inches to almost two feet in length. As the Koi moves around her lily pond she moves in and out of shadows and from reflection to clear patches.  When I watch the peaceful life of a Koi Pond I see polage art and in the gentle transitions of polage art colors I see the graceful movement of the Koi.

Transition

Transition

mixed polage art media, one of a kind, 13 x 13"

The transformation from bud to flower, from budding leaf to full plant and from caterpillar to butterfly are essential examples of the creative power of life and are the change that I love to represent in my work. This interactive Polage art requires the viewer’s participation in order to creating that transition. It is a more sculptural piece with some depth to the elements.

Seahorses

Seahorses

mixed polage art media, one of a kind, 14 x 14"

Seahorses nod and flow in the streams of moving water.  I built this piece in layers so that as you move past it, not only do the colors shift, but elements of the image move to and fro.  It is one of my favorite liquid crystal pieces with lots of depth and color change.

Working Life

Working Life

Similar in construction and depth to Transition, this piece also requires participation to see the hive change to the view of the single worker bee on a clover flower. The Bee is one of my favorite images to represent since he represents the ultimate in cooperation and community, and because his industrious work creates and propagates so much of the beauty in the natural world.

Bud & Bird

One of my favorite things about Spring is to see the unfurling of the buds on the trees as the sturdy baby leaves unfold and speed out.  Soon the birds are building nests.

Our friend and partner the honey bee finds his nectar among the spring blossoms.  This view morphs into the image of a hive to which the bee returns with the spoils of his labors.

Five Koi

Five Koi

mixed polage art media, one of a kind, 8 x 10"

Koi swimming gracefully among their sisters have the same gentle movement that I aim to replicate in the subtle changes in color of polage art. The reflections on the surface of the water hide them and they reappear somewhere else along their meandering drifts.

Beautiful iridescent dragonflies darted around my pond playfully. Their flashing wings seem to create pulses in the air around them as they beat them furiously to lift and drift.

Silver Torch

mixed polage art media, edition of 6, 12"

One of my neighbors has this amazing cactus in their front yard.  It gets enormous white blossoms that last only a day each, usually in early June.  I feel lucky when I get to see one. The hummingbirds have to be on the ball too!

Nimble

Nimble

mixed polage art media, one of a kind, 17 x 17"

The hummingbird beats her wings more than 50 times per second which allows her to hover midair, looking for all the world like she is dangling from an invisible wire.  The color that radiates from her feathers draw me in; colors with shift and shine that are somehow more than any single color.  Hummingbirds are nimble, fast and flexible.  The air ripples with her energy. This one morphs into a woman. I wish I had those qualities.

Working the Blossoms

Working the Blossoms

mixed polage art media, AP, 19"

There is a beautiful quote from a labor activist in the 1930s who said workers must have bread, but they must have roses too, meaning that beyond just the strict necessities of survival, people need flowers, or the beautiful things in life... The bee is our most important and hard worker, keeping our crops going and as a coincidence, creating the beauty of flowers in our lives too.  The bee reminds us to balance our hard work and needs with appreciation of beauty and art.

A butterfly enjoying the fruits of her labors, as the flowers she feeds from are pollinated by her peripatetic visits.  I intend this as a symbol of the potential in all of us to be genuinely ourselves.
