The colors in hummingbird feathers and in the “scales” of butterfly wings are the result of the same “birefringence” that Austine uses to create the colors in her works of art. And bees can “see” the polarized light of the sky, the same kind of light Austine uses to bring her art alive. So, this work pays homage to the mysterious properties of light that give us so much beauty to see in nature.
