Austine would have turned 79 this November 10th. In commemoration I wanted to create a limited edition small Polage artwork to unveil on her birthday. When I was working on ideas for it a few months ago, I happened upon a list of National Calendar Days and saw that November 10 is National Forget Me Not Day (how could I forget you, Mom?) and of course it seemed like the perfect fit. The Forget Me Not is such a beautiful little flower with colors that depict beautifully in the polarized light medium. I also included a hummingbird which we all think of as Austine’s spirit animal, one she so often included in her artwork.
My mom and I collaborated closely for almost 40 years, so to honor her innovation and creativity, I developed a new technique with this piece that gives the art a whole new effect. The image is visible in full color when backlit or sitting in a window, but this new method gives the piece a shimmery liveliness in plain view and a swirling effect through a viewer.
